The Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (IBEI) was established in 2004 as a postgraduate research and teaching institute.

IBEI is a centre of academic excellence specializing in the field of international studies. It combines outstanding research with high-quality teaching. A graduate school and research institute supported by the main universities in Barcelona, IBEI has over 30 faculties with doctorates from major North American or European universities, including many with distinguished profiles in international relations, international political economy, and comparative politics.

At the crossroads between Europe, the Mediterranean, and Latin America, Barcelona provides a unique setting to think about the intricacies of governance, development, and security on a global scale.

The Master’s programs in International Relations and in International Security are among the strongest in southern Europe, and IBEI successfully launched a Master’s in International Development in September 2016. Additionally, IBEI has a Erasmus Mundus Master Program in Public Policy, founded in 2007, co-taught with the Central European University in Budapest (Hungary), the Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University in The Hague (Netherlands), the University of York (UK).

Students are drawn from over 40 nationalities, and find the enriching multilingual and culturally diverse environment they encounter at IBEI rewarding.

Research is one of the main pillars supporting IBEI's academic development. The challenges of the future will mean a commitment to publicising and strengthening our research work and its impact.
