Submitted by University College of Dublin on Thu, 11/03/2016 - 13:19

In his address, Dr Ian Speller examined the different ways in which small navies can contribute to national and international security. He focused on the challenges of security at sea (including migration, criminality, terrorism, piracy and inter-state confrontation) and also the opportunities that exist to use the sea as a medium to support security ashore.  In his address, he also explored the importance of small navies within the context of the EU Maritime Security Strategy and the US 'Co-operative Strategy for 21st Century Sea power' and discussed the implications for Irish defence policy and for the Irish Naval Service.
